Spider-Man 3: Record Set

Sam Raimi’s “Spider Man 3” looks like it’s set a record for opening day box receipts.

Sometime this morning, sources say Sony Pictures Entertainment will announce that the third installment of the Spider Man saga earned over $55 million on Friday. That puts it ahead of “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”

Indeed, “Spider Man 3” was such a hit that the take may have been as high as $57 million.

Edit: Largest first-day take of all time
“Spider-Man 3” took in $59 million in its opening day on Friday as the biggest first day take of all time, according to Sony estimates.
Pic handily beat the $55.8 million that “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” reaped last year in its July opening.
Latest “Spider” was also the widest opening of all time in 4, 252 theaters.
Pic will next look to break “Dead Man’s” opening weekend tally of $135.6 million.
Third Spidey film is outpacing the second pic in the series, which hit $40.4 million in its opening day.
