LOS ANGELES — Filmmakers have revealed that Spider-Man’s newest nemesis will be played by Oscar nominee Thomas Haden Church. Just which villain he’ll play remains a mystery, though.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios were keeping mum on the actual character he will bring to life from the many enemies the superhero has fought in the comic-book series.

With Tobey Maguire returning as the hero and Kirsten Dunst back as girl-next-door Mary Jane Watson (M.J.), “Spider-Man 3” begins filming early next year and is due out May 4, 2007.

“In addition to the ongoing relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life,” said Sam Raimi, director of the “Spider-Man” flicks. Church follows Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin in “Spider-Man” and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock in “Spider-Man 2.”

A co-star in the 1990s sitcom “Wings,” Church earned a supporting-actor Academy Award nomination for his role as a randy bachelor on a last fling in the road-trip tale “Sideways.”
